{"id":475,"date":"2014-06-09T12:49:33","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T17:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/?p=475"},"modified":"2015-10-29T13:30:59","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T18:30:59","slug":"first-things-you-learn-after-quitting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/first-things-you-learn-after-quitting\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Things You Learn After Quitting Your Full-Time Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/redwoods-tall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-490\" src=\"https:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/redwoods-tall.jpg\" alt=\"redwoods-tall\" width=\"600\" height=\"736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/redwoods-tall.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/redwoods-tall-244x300.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><em><small>(Image credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/Imagebase.net\" target=\"_blank\">Imagebase.net<\/a>)<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wow!<\/em> \u00a0<em>I don&#8217;t have to go to work again- ever!\u00a0 This day can be anything I want!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An amazing feeling- but also a worrying one.<\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t want to waste it.\u00a0 <em>W<\/em><em>hat should I do?\u00a0 <\/em>I&#8217;d better decide fast- I&#8217;m wasting time RIGHT NOW.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The question gnaws at me.\u00a0 Before I know it, I&#8217;ve wasted hours with unnecessary guilt and frustration.<\/p>\n<p>I should go <em>write,<\/em> right?\u00a0 Duh!\u00a0 That\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ellismorning.com\/blog\/sword-and-starship\/\" target=\"_blank\">novel<\/a> won&#8217;t finish itself.\u00a0 But there are a hundred other things I&#8217;m responsible for.\u00a0 When do I fit that stuff in?\u00a0 When do I take time to just loaf around, because gosh darn it I&#8217;ve earned it?\u00a0 A balance must be sought.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after leaving my job, I realized&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#8217;ll slip into Permanent Weekend Mode if you&#8217;re not careful.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make a leisurely breakfast, throw on <em>Seinfeld<\/em> with my coffee, relax on the couch&#8230;\u00a0 Shit, it&#8217;s 11:30!\u00a0 Wasn&#8217;t I supposed to be doing stuff?<\/p>\n<p>No alarm blares you out of bed.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no dress-suit to put on or bus to catch.\u00a0 Everything around you screams &#8220;weekend,&#8221; so you fall into your weekend routine- which, let&#8217;s face it, is probably not your most productive behavior.\u00a0 This is fine for the first few days or weeks.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re burned out, you can use the break.\u00a0 After that, though&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You must work to define your new &#8220;normal.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a work in progress.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not racing to make Monday through Friday all the same again, but some structure and discipline are essential for doing more than goofing off.\u00a0 I have &#8220;work&#8221; goals (my writing projects), &#8220;hobby&#8221; goals (non-writing stuff I like to do), and the maintenance activities that keep me and my household hale and happy.\u00a0 What should I do when?\u00a0 Whether I&#8217;m truly <em>carpe<\/em>-ing the <em>diem <\/em>is up to me to decide- but I won&#8217;t know what works best until I try different things.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m especially excited about experimenting with my sleep schedule.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to set a consistent wake up and bedtime (I&#8217;m bad about going to bed at a consistent time each night).<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you don&#8217;t already have a reliable to-do tracking system, you need one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or things won&#8217;t get done.\u00a0 Even a self-motivated person forgets when a certain appointment is or what he needed from the store.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used calendars and day planners in the past to good effect.\u00a0 I&#8217;m trying out OneNote now, which is what I used at work to keep track of what tasks were due when.\u00a0 The Mac version isn&#8217;t quite as polished as the Windows version, but I&#8217;m thrilled there&#8217;s a Mac version at all.\u00a0 Plus, it&#8217;s a free download from the App Store!<\/p>\n<p>Assign tasks to specific days.\u00a0 Throw &#8220;Paint the bedroom&#8221; on a to-do list, and it&#8217;ll never budge.\u00a0 &#8220;Paint the bedroom 6\/14&#8221; &#8211; now you&#8217;re making a commitment you&#8217;re more likely to follow through with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals keep you moving forward.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be your own dream boss: someone who defines challenging tasks, gives leeway on how and when those tasks are completed, and re-prioritizes as needed <em>without<\/em> freaking out or throwing blame around.<\/p>\n<p>I still have the one-chapter-a-week editing goal, but now I find that something even more granular is needed so I don&#8217;t spend my non-writing hours worrying I&#8217;m not progressing fast enough.\u00a0 A daily goal like &#8220;finish rewriting this scene&#8221; helps.\u00a0 Of course, longer-term goals are great too.\u00a0 I want to be done with editing my novel by July\/August so I can spend August drafting a new story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You still won&#8217;t have time until you make time!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Languages, drawing, crochet, piano&#8230; how is it I freed up 40 hours per week and <em>still<\/em> can&#8217;t fit these in?<\/p>\n<p>In my case, I just haven&#8217;t yet made the same commitment to them as with writing.\u00a0 I&#8217;m trying small goals with these, one hobby at a time.\u00a0 Once I get German and Spanish back into my life on a daily basis, I&#8217;ll try the same with drawing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad days still happen.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leaving full-time work behind may alleviate a great deal of anxiety, but it&#8217;s never one&#8217;s sole source of problems.\u00a0 Unfortunate situations occur everywhere.\u00a0 Health issues still crop up and take out a perfectly good day.\u00a0 I really, really must learn not to beat myself up over things outside my control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Budgeting, saving, and cost-cutting are more important than ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whoops!\u00a0 Guess which household is no longer earning a solid guaranteed income?\u00a0 From here on out, we may be earning anywhere from hundreds to thousands per month, which makes budgeting and taxes so much more fun!<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, my spouse and I had excellent saving and investing habits for years before we made plans to exit the rat race.\u00a0 In the past year or so, we&#8217;ve been hammering away at expenses.\u00a0 After all, the less we spend, the less we need to make.\u00a0 We&#8217;re constantly looking for expenses we can cut out entirely, and ways to save on essentials.\u00a0 For more info on the full &#8220;financial badassity&#8221;
